Ok, so we have now started our Studio Culture Week and my group had the amazing pleasure of visiting the Second Floor Studios & Arts (SFSA).
We met Matthew Wood, who is the Director. It was amazing and such an enormous place it was.
In a separate artistic room, we pulled some chairs together, where we sat down and listened to Matthew and Kim, a graphic designer who helped in this tour, telling us about this studio history.
In 1994, Matthew Wood started looking for a space with artists, however, it was ‘in 1997 that it was established and it is the UK’s largest single site affordable studio space project for visual and fine artists, craft makers and designers.’
Their ‘core aim is providing best quality studios and facilities at monthly rental prices’ that their ‘members can afford and whom would otherwise struggle to find comparable studio workspace on the open commercial market.’
We visited 4 studios within the 350 studios of the building and met 5 artists. I will be giving a brief introduction about which one of them along with some notes I have taken, in a later post… hope you enjoy it, as much as I did while visiting!
